This course is aimed specifically at people working in the child care industry. Children pose specific manual handling hazards that are not found in other groups. This course introduces the key Health and Safety legislation affecting manual handling in the work place, introduces the manual handling risk assessment and the principles of hazard and risk and gives examples of good practise to minimise the risk of manual handling injuries. It also outlines the basic anatomy and physiology of the back and how we can be injured. The practise of twenty four hour back care is emphasised to encourage students to look after their backs twenty four hours a day.

The course is a mixture of theory (including multimedia presentations) and hands on practical during which students handle manikins in specific child care settings so as to develop good handling techniques. They are encouraged to develop awareness of the potential problems posed by manual handling and the problem solving techniques that will minimise the risk of injury.

There is a short assessment paper at the end of the course.
